Blue Bruce The Christmas Spruce by Amy Lauren Miller is the story of a young spruce tree called Bruce, who lives in the mountains. He is surrounded by taller, stronger trees that in time are chosen to be Christmas trees. Bruce is worried that he will never catch up to the other trees, especially as the seasons change and he remains small. It makes him sad as he fears he will never be a Christmas tree and will spend his life alone. But in time, Bruce learns to accept that he is different and that is okay. He has a purpose and offers help to his animal friends. Soon Bruce starts to grow, changing his life forever. It may have taken him a little more time, but he gets there in the end.

Amy Lauren Miller has written a charming book in Blue Bruce The Christmas Spruce. The story has an important message – that we are who we are, and we shouldn’t worry about things we cannot change. Everyone grows in their own time. This is an important lesson for children to learn, especially if they are worried about being different from their friends in some way. The illustrations are eye-catching, and Maggie Russell has really brought the book to life with her drawings. The rhyming couplets make the story entertaining and easy to remember. This would be a great book for younger children who are learning to read. I would definitely recommend it for children around the 4–8-year-old age range.
