Bootzie Boot Camp by Colleen Driscoll captures the essence of childhood, growth, and the unexpected joys of farm life. The book follows the journey of Benjamin, an energetic and mischievous eleven-year-old boy, who is sent to spend two weeks on a farm with Mr. Hayne’s sister, Bootzie, while his parents are away on business trips. Initially resistant to the idea, Ben is determined to make the most of his summer vacation, which he had envisioned as a time for video games and relaxation with his friends. Through his interactions with Bootzie and her children, Ben receives valuable life lessons that shape his character and outlook.

Colleen Driscoll’s storytelling is engaging and humorous. From milking cows and mucking out stalls to collecting eggs and battling a lively rooster named Redford, Ben’s experiences are fun and educational. The author effectively portrays the dynamics of farm life, emphasizing the importance of hard work, responsibility, and teamwork. The book is filled with vivid descriptions of farm life, from the smell of fresh hay in the loft to the taste of homemade lemonade and strawberry shortcake. It’s a story of personal growth, family bonds, and the unexpected rewards of stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Driscoll’s talent for telling a story that makes the reader feel part of it is second to none. As a bonus, Driscoll shares Bootzie’s lemonade recipe, a must-try. Bootzie Boot Camp is a charming tale that will appeal to young readers and anyone looking for a delightful read, appreciating the joys of hard work and the beauty of farm life.
