In Katherine Wheelwright’s Bound by Prophecy, eighteen-year-old Elandria, a herbalist’s granddaughter, is trapped in Davenwood beneath the rule of her cruel uncle Boris. After discovering he plans to sell her into marriage, she steals back her mother’s strange medallion as escape becomes her only goal. Her path crosses Drustan, a brooding mage whose unexplained instincts draw him toward her just as danger closes in. When Elandria is able to see deadly wraiths invisible to ordinary people, Drustan takes her toward Mount Haven, a hidden refuge for mages protected inside the mountains. There, Elandria begins learning that the dreams which have followed her for years may be connected to powers she never knew she possessed. As questions surrounding her medallion multiply, signs of an approaching threat suggest the answers she wants may place her directly in its path.
Katherine Wheelwright’s Bound by Prophecy is an incredible romantic fantasy, with Airidia feeling instantly magical in every delightful detail. Drustan has a wonderfully dry presence, especially when he teases Elandria after she steps into a turberia’s bog, only to start sinking. Lillian, the Infuser who immediately claims Elandria as a friend, brings real warmth to Mount Haven. The world-building is fantastic, with mage customs giving the setting a distinctive character. Take the Midsummer Festival, where young competitors climb a twelve-foot greased pole for a pouch of coins, knowing magic brings disqualification. That kind of detail tells you exactly how fully this world has been imagined. Every description of Mount Haven is visual and superb, the best of the best being a bathhouse, where a gravity-powered washing tub sits beside a drying rack warmed through heated stone. Readers drawn to romantic fantasy centered on mages living beneath ancient prophecy are in for a real treat. Very highly recommended.
