Brainstorming: It's Raining Ideas! is the second book in author and educator, Terri Kelley's Writing Is a Process Series. She sets out easy and simple ways for kids to start building ideas and images before they start writing. The book is marvelously illustrated by Milena Radeva, whose watercolors and color-pencil drawings make the author's ideas and imagery really come alive. The narrator of the story has decided to write about his friend Fred, and his teacher suggests he start thinking about words that express his friend and the things they do together. He thinks about a park they went to, and then a dog they saw, and the fun they had there. Before he knows it, there's a whole story just waiting to be told.
Every so often, I come across a children's story that has me smiling from ear to ear, literally. Terri Kelley's Brainstorming: It's Raining Ideas! is one of those books. Kelley introduces creative writing processes to children in a manner that's exciting and visual, and the illustrations of artist Milena Radeva work beautifully with the story. While the book is obviously geared to children, it's one of those books that could be on any aspiring writer's bookshelf, perfect for those moments when the words just don't seem to come and despair begins to set in. Take a moment to enjoy and see how the incredible artwork meshes with the developing story-line, and you'll see what I mean. What a great book this is! It's perfect for children of all ages.
