Camera, Speed...Action! by Michael Ray Davis is intended to be read as an insider's secrets to the real world of acting. Davis harnesses a lifetime of personal and professional experiences and compiles what he can into this story. It covers what it takes to be an actor, the recommended wardrobe staples to have on hand, auditioning, what to expect on different sets, and finding yourself an agent. Davis rounds all of this out with industry phrases and their meanings and an epilogue.
I obtained my SAG card after my very first job as an extra when Steven Spielberg pulled me off a street and gave me a couple of throwaway lines in Ready Player One. It was terrifying and exciting, and I had no idea what I was doing. This is where Camera, Speed...Action! by Michael Ray Davis would have come in handy. The narrative is light and conversational, even if some of the references may be outdated for younger readers; people who think of Paul Newman as the ranch-dressing guy, or don't know there was a time when women didn't get full bikini waxes. This book is intended for a universal audience but I do think it will be more suited to those getting into the business later in life. Overall, Davis offers a wealth of knowledge in a comfortable fashion.
