Captain Grisswold With His Crew and Friends: Who's Who on the Crew is a children's animal book written by Chris Lakin and illustrated by I Tina Lakin. The captain lives on a riverboat named Christina, and he is accompanied by some very special people who make his travels run smoothly. With verses and pictures, Lakin introduces a functioning riverboat to children and their adult caregivers. He describes what the captain and his crew do, and illustrates what the different working parts of a boat look like and how they function. While he's introducing the crew, Lakin also offers a few mathematical challenges to young readers. One of the things Captain Grisswold does with Christina is help his farmer friend bring his produce to market. Readers can follow the captain's travels and explore where he lives by using the river map which the authors include at the back of the book.
Chris Lakin's children's animal book entertains and educates children and those adults lucky enough to get to read this book aloud. I loved learning about riverboats and how they operate. I Tina Lakin's illustrations are clever and brightly colored, and they work perfectly with the text. The author's choice of words and rhymes give the story sizzle and life, and I could envision kids having a lot of fun chanting along with some of the characters. The highlight for me, however, was that map at the end of the book. It really brought the story and the riverboat experience to a whole new level of familiarity for me. I enjoyed reading Captain Grisswold With His Crew and Friends and recommend it most highly.
