Cats and Dogs Make the Best of Friends by Gina Gallois is a children’s book that tells the story of two best friends, Sage and Jasmine. Sage’s family has adopted two little kittens, Carly and Fury, for him and his sister Hazel. His family always considered themselves cat people. At the same time, Jasmine’s family had adopted a little puppy, Teddy, also known as Theodore Sillypants McBarkington the third. As soon as Sage hears the news, concerning thoughts appear - what if they can no longer be friends because Jasmine is a dog person and Sage is a cat person? Is it really that difficult to pretend to be a dog person? Once they reach Jaz’s house, Sage meets Teddy, a fluffy and playful puppy that likes to catch the ball. The day passes, and they have fun playing with the dog. Was Sage’s concern real or not?
One of the aspects that I liked of Cats and Dogs Make the Best of Friends by Gina Gallois was the colorful, watercolor-like illustrations of Anastasia Khmelevska. Through them, the author’s story and characters came to life. Their visual impact is so pleasing, eye-catching, and lovely that when brought together with the story, the perfect combination is achieved. Although it is a children’s book, the author manages to touch on themes like love, fear, friendship, and concern. I also liked how, throughout the book, the author teaches that two people with different opinions and beliefs can still be friends despite their differences.
