After reading the third book in the Director series, I knew I would read anything from this author, so I picked up the fourth book, Chakana, and there is not an iota of disappointment. Zach Fortier understands that it takes a compelling protagonist to keep a series enjoyable and gripping and offers readers Nick Hudson. This time the stakes are raised even higher and the conflict reaches a phenomenal stage with the fall of camps Baroota, Izadi, and Cachibache. Nick’s team, the Asgarda, has been compromised and he believes it’s the work of the Director. While time is against him, Nick has little to go on and few options. But he is about to do the one thing no one would expect to bring down the Director, once and for all.
A satisfying and delightful finale to a great series, Chakana is filled with action, plot twists, and intrigue. The characters evolve in unimaginable ways and Zach Fortier makes sure he prepares surprises for readers at each turn of the story. Each chapter is a build up to the next intensive bout of action in the one following. The prose is crisp, the humor exacting, and the storytelling craft masterly. The unpredictability in the plot is one of the elements of the narrative that creates the sense of suspense and awakens interest in readers. The final entry in this series is more atmospheric than the others, with colorful and intriguing characters and a conflict that is so skillfully handled that readers want to see how it ends. It kept me up all night.
