Eddie Barrow, a struggling writer, loses his job at a bookstore and his girl on the same day, and he might just lose his apartment as well if he can’t pay the rent. Just when he thinks things can’t possibly get well any worse, they do. His depressed and almost permanently drunk roommate and best friend, Corey, has also lost his job. Since Eddie had a huge fight with his parents, there is no help coming from that corner. When Corey’s girlfriend, Jordyn, suggests a publicity stunt that could help them all out of the financial hole, Eddie feels he has no choice but to agree. And that mistake launches a dangerous chain of events that leaves the three friends running for their very lives through the chill Canadian winter. Pursued by the authorities for murders they didn’t commit, they must try to solve the mystery before getting caught by the police or killed by the murderers.
A fun, light thriller, "Chill Run" is a quick read with a believable plot and likeable characters. The three main characters are all struggling with relationships, messy finances, dead bodies and other inconveniences. Eddie and Corey in particular have a lot of growing up to do, as Jordyn notes on several occasions. I enjoyed the humor of the friends, bantering back and forth in their Caribbean accents. The story could benefit from a thorough copy and content editing, and there are a few sections in conversations or descriptions that seemed a bit forced and which could be tightened up.
