"Choice and Consequence" by Timothy Fiscus is a quick read, but upon finishing the book it is worthwhile to go back and review anything you may have highlighted or underlined. Fiscus has drawn on many sources such as Carolyn Myss, Zen, Deepak Chopra, popular movies, and New Age, and I detect an underlying Stoicism, especially making “a point of minimizing expectations, thus minimizing disappointments.” He has pulled together all these belief systems and taken parts from each of them. In addition, he has developed a theory of awareness levels that can help you to advance through your life, in essence “growing up.” He states that he has done metaphysical counseling, so this appears to be the overriding point of view. There are many bits of advice and tips throughout the entire text that may seem like a to-do list at times, but if you take the time to list those that appeal to you and do them, I believe you will find merit. One such example is to take a walk or jog to reduce stress and thereby stimulate your creative mind, prompting ideas and decisions. This is where it is of benefit if you highlight points on your first read so that you can go back through them and assimilate them after finishing the book.
Personally, I found many nuggets of truth for my own life. Discussions of patterns caused by my own choices caused me to reflect on where I could make different choices going forward and, although I have already made progress along these lines in recent years and attained a life closer to what I want. "Choice and Consequence" is a great title because it really says it all. Life is made up of a series of choices and their relevant consequences. I’m interested to see what other books Timothy Fiscus may have authored.
