In Anne Ward Crocker's Close Friends' Cathedral Adventure, a young toad named Peat returns home from a forbidden swim to news that the woodland ravine where his family lives is about to be destroyed. When workers begin uprooting the forest, Peat makes an unexpected choice: he hides beneath the roots of Christy, a Christmas fern, beside his earthworm friend Paul-Paulette. Carried away from everything he has known, Peat is swept into an unfamiliar world of station wagons, stone stairways, cathedral gardens, and crowded halls filled with flowers. Separated from the companions who traveled with him, he must find his way through strange spaces and unfamiliar creatures while holding to the promise that friends belong together.
Anne Ward Crocker’s Close Friends' Cathedral Adventure is a story with enormous heart. Peat is the emotional center. He is youthful and has a penchant for getting himself into situations that, like most children, require an adult to step in to save him. Still, he is loyal and courageous, taking on a seemingly impossible journey to get back to his friends and family. He faces the task of crossing a vast cathedral alone until he finally reaches the stair garden, where his devotion is rewarded. I absolutely love Philomena, the cathedral housefly, singular as a tiny guardian whose courage and kindness are integral to Peat's mission. Crocker creates visuals of the spaces with lovely prose, where the mossy ravine feels lived in, and the cathedral’s Garth fountain and Space Window create a grand setting. Overall, this is a wonderful tale. Very highly recommended.
