Coaching For (a) Change: How to Engage, Empower, and Activate People by Greg Giuliano is an action-oriented handbook that provides specific steps on how to provide coaching in serving to lead. This is different than the old style of command and control model where keeping the power of “do what I want you to do” tends to demotivate rather than motivate your team. The first section, From Manager to Coach, talks about how leadership has changed to a coaching philosophy, embracing a coaching mindset, and provides specific skills that can be used to coach your team members both individually and as a group. The author provides valuable tools including the Team Roadmap and Tactical Action Plan. The second section introduces the GR8 Coach. In this section, he recommends the use of eight steps. The author elaborates on each of the steps of the framework and questions that can help your team succeed. I found the idea that one-on-ones to be led by the employee’s agenda for coaching to be a valuable perspective that can improve my meetings with my team.
It is a well-organized book that provides specific action steps and exercises you can conduct with your team to engage them in problem-solving, rather than the leader coming to that conclusion and insisting the team follow his solution. The problem with many leaders is they do not allow their team to come to their own conclusions which inhibits creativity and innovation. The book provides specific questions to ask your team members while coaching them based on their individual strengths and weaknesses. I found Coaching For (a) Change by Greg Giuliano to be a very valuable book worth rereading and implementing. The title including (a) suggests that not only is it about coaching for change but using a different approach to increase team effectiveness and efficiency (Coaching for A Change). A well-written, practical handbook on leading and coaching, I highly recommend this book to all managers and leaders.
