Coco the Crazy Pup is the second book in the Willow and Coco’s Children’s Series, written by Rachel McGrath and illustrated by Mario Tereso. Coco is an eight-week-old puppy, excited to be going to his new home. Once he gets there, Coco meets a cat called Willow. Willow is annoyed by Coco’s constant barking and that he keeps trying to steal Willow’s food. Willow thinks Coco is very silly and irritating, but slowly learns to live with Coco and his bad habits. Coco’s energy levels are high and he likes to chase balls, chew toys, and bark at birds. When Coco goes to the park, he makes friends with other dogs, but when he goes to the lake and barks at the ducks, a large grey cat sets upon him. Coco is frightened until an unexpected friend and protector appears and keeps him safe.
Rachel McGrath’s story about a young puppy who is curious, excited, and energetic is just the right book for young children who are about to adopt a puppy into their family. There are many challenges and responsibilities involved in taking on a new pet, and Coco the Crazy Pup tells of these challenges with the adventures he has, both with his family and with the outside world. Puppies are like children in many ways, in that they are curious and their attention is easily caught by something new. Throughout Coco’s adventures, he experiences many different emotions and forges a unique bond with the family’s cat, Willow. I quite enjoyed Coco the Crazy Pup and recommend that it be ideally stocked in school, home and veterinary libraries, as well as in stores at animal shelters, so that children can follow their new pup’s progress along with Coco’s adventures.
