The setting is the early Vietnam era. Adie found an old journal and immersed herself in the story of Tempe, a slave. The young women’s lives are similar. Tempe is grieving for her children. Her master has decided to sell them. The journal provides Adie a place to escape while her husband is unfaithful, she struggles to raise her child and deal with long buried grief of losing her sister.

Throughout this book, I could hear the beautiful southern drawls of the characters. This is southern fiction at its finest. J.L. Miles weaves two stories together. The two young brides were born a century apart yet with so much in common. From the first page, I was hooked. MS. Miles takes readers back in time, reminding them of the roots of prejudice and slavery. The characters make this book. They bring out emotion in you, one moment I was crying and the next I was laughing. I felt as though I was part of the story. There are twists and terms throughout this book. If you like fiction you will love this book.

I was blown away by J.L. Miles' first book, Roseflower Creek, so I had to buy Cold Rock River in hard cover.

I am so glad I did. Reading this book renewed my faith that some writers are truly gifted.

I could not put this book down. Miles' characterization and development made me feel like I was living the lives of her multi-faceted characters. The way she deals with Southern history, racism, slavery, marriage, relationships, and other crucial elements, is riveting and brilliant.

You will not be disappointed if you read this book. I can't wait for her next

"Cold Rock River" ripped me apart. From the first sentence, no, from the first word to the very last.
Ms. Miles - It was so fun to spend that time with your characters. I thought your first book, "Roseflower Creek" was a touch of class, but this one? Well, a wheelbarrow full of class comes to mind. You stopped me in my tracks.

I pre-ordered this book from Amazon.com and finished it last nite. I loved it! It's a great book. I also have Roseflower Creek by this author, which I thought was great, too, but this one's even better. It usually takes me ages to go through a book. Not this one. I just ordered two copies to give to friends for Christmas. I thoroughly recommend Cold Rock River and Roseflower Creek.

I absolutely loved it! I laughed and I cried. It was full of joy and sorrow, love and loss, strength and frailty. The pefect chick-book! Will definitely read more books from J.L. Miles.

This story is about a young bride in the 1960s who reads the diary of another young bride who was a former slave. Their stories come together beautifully in the end. I loved this book.

This is a real story, with well defined characters and a riveting plot!
Adie and all of the characters in Ms. Miles books are real and engaging, even the ones you want to hate! This is a wonderful compostion of historial fiction and contempoary fiction coming together seamlessly.
It is believeable and heartwarming. I loved this book and it is true...I couldn't put it down! Bravo Ms. Miles....I can't wait for more stories from you!

I read the reviews before I got this book and was skeptical of a book that "you couldn't put down." But - they were right! This book is so well written - it just pulls you into the story and won't let you go. And the worst part was that it ended - as all books do - but I really, really missed it. I found myself thinking about the characters as though they were real people that I knew - I wanted to know more about them - I didn't want to lose them. Wonderful, wonderful book - I'm recommending it to everyone I know.

I recommend this book. It was so interesting-it had so many plot twists that I couldn't put it down.

Adie reads the journal of a slave girl, Tempe. The journal was so gripping because it chronicled the horrible things that happenend to Tempe. After "the freedom" came, Tempe was able to enjoy her life because of her strong strength of character. Adie gains strength from the journal and is able to come to terms with a family tragedy that happened when she was 7.

I enjoyed this book very much. It held my interest until the end, which was somewhat predictable, but very much worth reading. Good book!

G. S. Miller

Just when you are immersed in the character in the present, you are then in the past reading from the diary of the second character and which you then become equally immersed. They grab you heart and soul. You root for each one and your heart breaks with their heartaches. It is also amazing to me when you laugh out loud at some of the funny parts. These are the best characters, ones that you never forget. It is one of those great books, we all love, where the characters stay with you even after you've closed the book and moved reluctantly on.

Loves to Read

This is the story of a lonely young pregnant bride who is caught up in the journal of a slave girl while trying to deal with her own tribulations. This book hooked me from the very beginning and didn't let me go. The characters are beautifully detailed and the storyline is fascinating. The book was full of plot twists that were totally unexpected. It was a definite page turner and a pleasure to read.

From the first sentence, "I was five that spring Annie choked on a jelly bean" to the stunning conclusion, you will not be able to put this wonderful novel down. Miles gets it all right, the dialogue, the pacing, to the period details.

COLD ROCK RIVER stayed with me long after I'd finished it. Can't wait for another offering from this author.
