Conjuration Rising by Kristyn Van Cleave is the second book in the Dreambreath Saga, a story that is a work of beauty and a joy to read. At eleven, Eylene was literally “ripped” from her home, planet, and family. She may be living on earth, but she is from the conjuration race, a Dreambreath, and for her to survive the strength of the evil man who killed her parents, she will have to not only rely on the Eye of Myth the father gave her and the protection of Thyme, but also master the art of conjuration. Can she follow her father’s dream to stop Mortimeir from taking control of the universe, eradicating the reign of sorcerers, and bringing order and unity to the universe?
I loved both the good characters and the villains, and they are created to perfectly fit into their roles. I found it very interesting that Mortimeir tortured and killed the one who gave him the powers he has now. He is a villain who is well-imagined, and just as it plays out in the lives of many despots and all sorts of power mongers, he is blind and can’t see the limits of his power. Eylene is a protagonist who won my sympathy, a character with a difficult path to walk. It is interesting to see how she develops throughout the story and how she learns to be more confident in herself and courageous. Conjuration Rising is a well-crafted story with enticing prose. Kristyn Van Cleave has created an epic fantasy that will arrest the attention of her readers and have them enraptured by her powerful narrative voice. I was thrilled by it.
