Connecting the Stars by Deborah Stevenson is a delightful and educational children’s picture book about constellations. Deborah teaches us about several constellations named after Greek myths. There’s Pegasus who was Zeus’s faithful and much-loved stallion, Ursa Major and Minor who illustrate the sad story of a mother’s love for her child, and Phoenix, who famously rises from the ashes. The book is cleverly illustrated to show the animal and the constellation as many of our predecessors would have viewed them in the sky when they shared these captivating myths. Stella Maris skilfully illustrates each constellation with hidden clues as to whether the constellation is visible in the northern or southern hemisphere, adding a unique game-like element to this children’s book. This is a marvelous introduction for children to the world of astronomy and has a crucial and memorable life lesson: we are all connected.
I am a great lover of Greek mythology and even I didn’t know that so many constellations were named after Greek myths and figures. Deborah Stevenson has created a dreamy picture book filled with rhyming verses to capture children’s attention about this unique topic. Her overall theme of inclusiveness and interconnectedness is a loving message to any child looking up at the stars. She shows that people have always created stories and myths to explain the world around us. The illustrations in Connecting the Stars are breathtaking and bring each constellation to life. There’s no better way to learn about constellations than with a heartwarming message for all children.
