Author Nancy Scalabroni has given us a story about a cat with a very long name and a very long tail in CougaMongaMingaMan. CougaMongaMingaMan, or Cougie as he is called, is a friendly cat whose long tail allows him to be spotted from a long distance away. He hangs out with the neighborhood cats, Tonto, Miss Pittypat and Snow. One day, there is a new cat in town and they all try to figure out why the new cat does not appear to want to socialize. Finally, Snow tells the cat gang that she has met the new cat, whose name is Two-Face, and that the new cat is simply shy. One day, Cougie fails to show up at the cat meeting and the cat friends wonder what could have happened to Cougie. Then the new cat, Two-Face, shows up and explains that Cougie has had an unfortunate accident which Two-Face witnessed.

The cat gang in CougaMongaMingaMan is one which most children will like. The cats do have personalities so a discussion about what makes the cats unique would be in order after the book is read. The gangs' loyalty to Cougie is touching and children will relate to the message of friendship. I did feel some of the wording was a bit beyond the vocabulary of preschool children, but the illustrations are marvelous and they will give clues to difficult words. The sudden introduction of the new park needed background. But, all in all, this is a book children will love. It is colorful and it has a good message.

Dear Ms. Pirnot,

Thank you for the very nice review for the first book in the Couga Series, CougaMongaMingaMan...the cat with the very long name and the very long tail. I appreciate your expertise and I look forward to another review from Reader's Favorites when I send in the second book of the series, CougaMongaMingaMan Meets Maggie. The books for this series are for children 7-9, however as you stated, younger ones still enjoy the illustrations and the story as it is being read to them.
