Cristo & The Werewolf Dinner by Angus Bessai is a fantasy about a disgraced warrior dwarf, Cristo. The bounty hunter can’t believe his luck when he’s offered one hundred gold pieces to attend a noble’s birthday party. The duke’s daughter is turning ten, and she wants to hear stories of war from battle-hardened warriors like Cristo. But she’s not a dwarf child; she’s human, and there’s no way he can recount a story without scarring her for life. While wandering the halls and contemplating this dilemma, he comes across a gruesome sight. Blood, gore, and a golden tress are all he can make out of the horrifying scene. After an uncomfortable line of questioning renders him innocent, Cristo is hired by the duke as a bounty hunter to find the bloodthirsty monster responsible for the horrific act. It is up to Cristo to save the day, and as a loyal, albeit former Shield Brother, that is exactly what he is going to do.
Horrifying and hilarious, Cristo & The Werewolf Dinner offers an endlessly entertaining, sometimes hard-to-swallow narrative, an extremely comical plot, and equally bizarre and quirky characters. Although Cristo comes across as crass, he is also a dwarf of integrity, a character trait he holds in the highest regard. Hardened by the brutalities of the world and its disappointments, he keeps everyone at arm’s length. Yet, despite all this, I found him likable, empathetic, and good-hearted. Angus Bessai created a magical world where mythical creatures come to life, and readers can enjoy a suspense-filled thriller. The plot was clever and unpredictable, and I was pleasantly surprised by the shocking twist toward the end. The writing style was captivating and kept me glued to the pages; I didn’t want to miss a thing. I recommend Cristo & The Werewolf Dinner to fans of psychological thrillers and those who’ve never lost touch with their inner child.
