Braden Vicentin finds himself at a crossroads in his life where he must decide what to do next after completing the demands of college. Despite being far from the familiar comforts of his East Coast home, he feels prepared to forge his path and escape his parents' influence, especially with his fiancee and trusted confidante Tessie by his side. His decision to enlist in the Aldea Baca police department results in him being involved in several fascinating and occasionally colorful adventures while performing his official duties. Michael DeMarco's Crossfire Southwest chronicles the exploits of a rookie officer who becomes a police chief.
In the plot of Michael DeMarco’s novel, a young man learns to balance his role as a family man with the demands that come with being a new member of the town's police force. What immediately stands out about Crossfire Southwest is the way Braden goes about contemplating his options while making the rich tradition within his lineage known to the reader. It is almost like he is attempting to fight against a fate that has already been written. DeMarco does an excellent job of portraying Tessie’s concerns and support for Braden in her conversations with him while maintaining a mildly humorous tone. The adventures are interesting and engaging as some of them will have the reader guessing how Braden and his comrades solve these problems. Be it trying to get a giant-sized offender to the station or negotiating the tricky dynamics of removing a damsel in distress from her bathroom, there is something here that every reader will enjoy and perhaps wonder if there is more to this book than the invention of a talented mind with a unique storytelling technique.
