In Cupid and Cupcakes by Kiri Patterson, Emma Woods wants nothing more than to see her mother happy. This leads her to devise a plan that involves getting her mom to attend a singles event for women over fifty, which is a challenge that’s easier said than done. Will her mother go willingly, or will she have to be tricked into attending? Something is also missing for her. Enter a Greek god, aka Mr. Muscles. Will Emma's focus on her mother's romantic chances make her unable to see a chance right in front of her? As Emma juggles her own dreams with well-meaning meddling, she quickly learns that love doesn’t always follow the path she imagines. With cupcakes as bribes, mistaken assumptions, and unexpected sparks, humor and heartfelt moments are blended in equal measure. Along with some other quirky characters, this is the tale of two women across two generations, trying to live a better life. In the end, readers may wonder if Emma will discover that the sweetest recipe of all is finding her own perfect, frosting-covered delight.
Reading Cupid and Cupcakes by Kiri Patterson felt like curling up with a sweet treat and a lighthearted rom-com, full of charm. I enjoyed how Patterson’s writing captured Emma’s quirks—her vintage tastes, gentle humor, and behind-the-scenes efforts to comfort those she loves most. I completely related to the character and felt that she was authentically introverted without it being overdone. I appreciated the light, playful dialogue, which included instances of self-doubt and quiet courage. The focus on real, complicated relationships (rather than perfect ones) made this a story I didn’t want to put down. I especially liked the details, such as the gesture of opening a door, an awkward laugh, and a sincere apology—these resonated more deeply than grand romantic declarations. Ultimately, this book’s warmth and understated charm made me wish I could linger longer inside Emma’s world, where forgiveness and hope shine through.
