Ken Tentarelli's Cyber Case Prima is the fourth book in the Cyber Case series. In this book, Prima Transport Innovation (PTI) is on the brink of making history with its revolutionary creation, the Prima Ace, a Level 5 autonomous truck poised to completely change freight transport. A high-stakes demonstration starts well, but then something tragic happens: Ace hits a cyclist when its lidar sensor inexplicably fails to detect the cyclist. A federal investigation is opened after this incident, and Persephone “Seph” Carano, Cyber Security Agency responder, is tasked to discover the cause of the accident. Seph quickly finds out that the collision wasn’t accidental but the result of sabotaged software. The question is: Who tampered with the software? PTI is in murky waters and is facing potential ruin if the culprit is not found quickly.
Cyber Case Prima is a wonderfully written blend of science fiction and thriller, and I was intrigued by the way the author skillfully creates a world of digital breadcrumbs and corporate secrecy. Ken Tentarelli's prose is gorgeous, and I enjoyed the vivid descriptions. The idea of a vehicle that can drive itself, integrated with Google Maps, already exists with Tesla, but the author uses it to create a thriller packed with action and a powerful company that faces a disastrous end. The race to find the person who corrupted the software creates a sense of urgency that elevates the action and suspense in the story. The characters are complex. Seph impressed me the most with her intelligence and ability to balance empathetic investigating skills with strict protocols, and her loyalty to Drew Grady, her college friend. Fluxion Sensors is a character who makes the conflict possible, and I was keen to discover his role. This book delivers the kind of entertainment I look for in thrillers and science fiction.
