Dangerous Food (Book Two) by Clark Selby is a suspenseful thriller that follows a motley group of characters racing against time to stop al-Qaeda's sinister plot to infect the beef supply in the US with a deadly cow disease. Drs. Shane Smith and Elizabeth Browning are gifted veterinary research scientists who also happen to be passionately in love with each other. They are used by the CIA and MI6 as bait, disguised as a couple on their honeymoon in Rio. Checking into a hotel where other scientists have gone missing, Shane and Elizabeth are taken by the dreaded Dr. al-Sadr, the think tank of al-Qaeda. Can they make their way out from the clutches of the terrorists and can Tom and Bob locate Dr. al-Sadr and be on time to rescue Shane and Elizabeth?

This is a great story with a compelling, thoughtful premise that introduces the theme of terrorism, one that is brilliantly developed throughout the novel. Al-Qaeda is determined to hit the US with a new form of disaster targeting the health of its citizens and the US and UK intelligence agents work together to foil the plan. There are dangerous moments in the story and when the scientists enlisted to help in stopping the deadly agenda are taken, readers think the worst could happen. Clark Selby’s prose is polished and crisp and the characters are well-written. The story moves at a great pace and I was keen on following the relationship between Shane and Elizabeth. They are a pair that readers will enjoy. The banter and the cleverly crafted dialogues are among the things I enjoyed in this well-paced, suspenseful story. It has a robust plot, an exciting cast of characters, and well-developed themes.

CIA Agent Tom Parker and FBI Agent Bob Barker are on their way to Dr. Logan Price, an expert on mad cow disease. The agents hope that Dr. Price could help them with information about the disease. Terrorists plan to introduce the disease into America through the beef supply. Dr. Price recommended that Dr. Shane Smith help them as he had worked with Price on his studies. One of Ron Parson’s operatives had inside information that one of the al-Qaeda cells will pay scientists to work on developing the super strain of the mad cow disease. The cell leader told his men that Americans will soon get hamburgers that will kill them. The agents and Dr. Smith are working together to stop this from happening in Dangerous Food by Clark Selby.

The plot in Dangerous Food by Clark Selby is scary and complicated. How are the agents and Dr. Smith going to stop the terrorists from contaminating the beef supply? The story was interesting and fast-paced. It was packed with action and there was never a dull moment. The plot kept me on the edge of my seat. I was intrigued from the start and could not turn the pages fast enough. I had to know what was going to happen next. I could not put the book down. The characters were excellently developed and skillfully handled. They were described as ordinary people, each with a specific set of skills. The characters were strong and relatable. Dangerous Food was superbly written. Now and then there was a surprise turn I did not expect. I enjoyed reading this suspenseful story.

Dangerous Food is a work of fiction in the action, suspense, and adventure subgenres. It is set in the same story concept as Dangerous Journey and was penned by author Clark Selby for the adult reading audience. As the danger continues and the threat builds from al-Qaeda, another deadly plot is discovered that could wipe out millions of American citizens. When an infectious threat to the US’s beef supply is on the cards, it’s up to doctors Shane Smith and Elizabeth Browning, expert veterinary research scientists, to uncover the sinister biological warfare at play. But along the way, the couple finds passion brewing between them in a very suspenseful game of cat and mouse.

Author Clark Selby has put a brand new twist on terrorist thriller novels with his unique brand of clever plot devices, high-stakes action, and genuine personal storytelling that cuts deep into his characters’ psyches. In this particular novel, I really enjoyed the espionage element as it was much more low-key than the standard violent incursions one sometimes finds in action novels, and this subtlety made it harder to predict the twists and turns that the story might take. I really liked Elizabeth as a powerful female lead character with a lot of great skills and a well-rounded personality beyond just being a love interest. Overall, I would certainly recommend Dangerous Food as a standalone thriller read but also as part of the larger series. I cannot wait to see where it takes me next!

Terrorists will do anything to live up to their reputation in implementing their jihad against the West. In Dangerous Food by Clark Selby, a CIA operative that penetrated one of al-Qaeda’s cells picked up information that the extremist network is financing scientists working on the development of the super strain of mad cow disease—a covert attack that will kill Americans eating hamburgers. Dr. Shane Smith, a brilliant veterinary research scientist, has been summoned to work for Homeland Security and to head up the investigation to stop this threat. The CIA and MI-6 are planning to use Smith and his fellow scientist, Dr. Elizabeth Browning, as bait. Smith and Browning pose as honeymooners in Rio de Janeiro, where their missing fellow scientists were last seen. In line with their plan, the terrorists are also interested in acquiring top-notch research veterinarians.

There is a thrill and excitement when reading about two people together on a risky mission. The plot becomes more cerebral and engaging as you take into account the chemistry of the two people involved. Doctors Smith and Browning have it, and because of Clark Selby’s three-dimensional characterization, the storyline works. Selby effectively uses their romantic relationship by putting them in harm’s way, while at the same time, it provides him with a sound reason for elaborate settings, espionage, and intrigue. He makes the story work because he pulls you along in the adventure, and you are glad enough to be pulled. The plot allows you to understand the trappings that go with preserving the interests of national security. Dangerous Food is an entertaining read that will appeal to readers who love thrillers with a strong element of romance.
