Dangerous Food (Book Two) by Clark Selby is a suspenseful thriller that follows a motley group of characters racing against time to stop al-Qaeda's sinister plot to infect the beef supply in the US with a deadly cow disease. Drs. Shane Smith and Elizabeth Browning are gifted veterinary research scientists who also happen to be passionately in love with each other. They are used by the CIA and MI6 as bait, disguised as a couple on their honeymoon in Rio. Checking into a hotel where other scientists have gone missing, Shane and Elizabeth are taken by the dreaded Dr. al-Sadr, the think tank of al-Qaeda. Can they make their way out from the clutches of the terrorists and can Tom and Bob locate Dr. al-Sadr and be on time to rescue Shane and Elizabeth?
This is a great story with a compelling, thoughtful premise that introduces the theme of terrorism, one that is brilliantly developed throughout the novel. Al-Qaeda is determined to hit the US with a new form of disaster targeting the health of its citizens and the US and UK intelligence agents work together to foil the plan. There are dangerous moments in the story and when the scientists enlisted to help in stopping the deadly agenda are taken, readers think the worst could happen. Clark Selby’s prose is polished and crisp and the characters are well-written. The story moves at a great pace and I was keen on following the relationship between Shane and Elizabeth. They are a pair that readers will enjoy. The banter and the cleverly crafted dialogues are among the things I enjoyed in this well-paced, suspenseful story. It has a robust plot, an exciting cast of characters, and well-developed themes.
