Date Due: Upon Death by Rachel Langlois introduces Ava S. Kelly, a military librarian whose sharp intellect and access to vast information networks become critical tools when a young Marine is murdered under suspicious circumstances. Refusing to accept the easy explanation, Ava digs deep into classified records, obscure archives, and hidden histories. As she closes in on the truth, she finds herself entangled in a web of high-stakes political and military secrets that go far beyond a single crime. With her life on the line, she forms an uneasy alliance with Marine Major Jack Lang, a man whose loyalty is as shadowed as his past.
Author Rachel Langlois has a keen sense of atmosphere and mood infused into every moment of this novel, blending sleuthing with suspense for a fast-paced mystery tale that never compromises on style. The military setting comes to life with a clear emphasis on detail, achieved through meticulous research and compelling narrative structure to set the context naturally through dialogue and action. This leads us deeper and deeper into a gripping mystery with layered intrigue and high stakes, where we’re discovering everything in real time with our protagonist. And what a hero she is, uniquely placed with booksmarts and practical skills, such as intellect and wit, at her disposal instead of weapons. This is a brilliant way to toy with classic tropes like the Sherlock savant kind of character, but also incorporate tough action moments and procedural crime elements so that fans of different genres can find something they love. Overall, I highly recommend Date Due: Upon Death as an ideal read for fans of cerebral mysteries and unconventional heroines.
