In Day of Wrath by Otho Eskin, DC Metropolitan Police detective Marko Zorn and his partner, Saoirse Richmond, must solve the murder of Father Vincent Holmes, Cardinal Archbishop of Washington. The victim is found on the cathedral floor, as if he fell from the stone balcony. Clues include a playing card in the victim’s fist and a ceremonial gold cross around his neck. Zorn is convinced these clues mean murder, but there are no witnesses, at least no obvious ones. Their investigation takes them into the inner workings of the church, its beliefs, its history, and the cult of Holy Death. They have until the Requiem Mass for Father Vincent concludes to find his killer. Was he murdered to prevent him from becoming the next Pope and reactivate the power of the cult?
Day of Wrath by Otho Eskin is a fast-moving action thriller with a coterie of unsavory yet colorful characters. The author excels at character development by introducing several potential witnesses, shady suspects, and questionable informants at every turn. At the same time, the relationship between Zorn and Richmond adds humorous touches to an otherwise serious situation. Marko Zorn is a very likeable character, one who loves to bend the rules and conduct his investigations his way, not as police procedures demand. This story is jam-packed with suspense and intrigue, particularly regarding the Holy Death cult. By delving into the history of the cult, the author spins several reasonable scenarios for the victim’s murder, but the ending is still a complete surprise.
