"Days of Blood & Starlight" is a part of a series and probably the second book. Not knowing what the first book was about, I picked this up. Here we see Karou being held captive in the desert by her enemies who have killed her kind and they force her to resurrect their own. She is torn between worlds as she passes as human yet she is not. Her heart is confused by her choice she has to make. She finds herself battling daily for survival while under the scrutiny of everyone near her. Targeted as a traitor by those who have been misinformed, she is scorned and loathed. She longs for life before the war but knows it can never be again.
Laini Taylor has one of the most brilliant imaginations we come across in the written word form. Her characters are well-defined to the point that the reader can close their eyes and picture the monsters, the angels and whatever else the author describes. I could all but feel the heat of the desert sand, and the cottony feel of a dry tongued mouth as the scene of the trek of her friends unfolds. I found my teeth gritting with hatred for the enemies of Karou and her people. And I was taken aback at the sight of the apocalyptic scenes and the disturbing underworld. If you are a fan of fantasy, this is definitely the series for you!
