Deadly Secret is a romantic suspense novel written by Kathleen Boaz. Dr. Dakota Remington is tired of dealing with death as the Coroner at Clarin General Hospital in Los Angeles. She's selling her house and moving back to San Francisco to be with her mother. Dakota's father is terminally ill, and her mother has always depended so much upon him that Dakota feels her place is by her side. Tommy, her brother, a successful LA attorney and model, has been trying without much success to get her to close up the house rather than make the permanent move selling her house would entail, but she's determined. Adding to the strain of her father's illness is the rash of brutal murders of prostitutes that's plagued Los Angeles, and the horrifying fact that the murderer, for some reason, has fixated on Dakota, sending her messages, breaking into her house, and insinuating himself into her dreams at night. Tommy has tried to persuade her to stay in his ultra-secure high-rise condo with him, but she's terrified of heights. LA Detective Cage Atkins is one of the detectives working the serial killer case; he's also the man who introduced Dakota to Michael Stone, the fiance who left her for Cage's wife. Cage is concerned about Dakota's safety, and his invitation to the department's Christmas party, while seeming platonic, could lead to a lot more than that.
Kathleen Boaz's romantic suspense novel, Deadly Secret, is fast-paced and exciting. The serial killer who is killing prostitutes and stalking Dakota is both anonymous and terrifying, and the combined efforts of Police Detective Atkins and Dakota lend a marvelous police procedural aspect to the story. Boaz builds a taut, well-constructed plot that will keep mystery buffs considering the cleverly hidden clues and red herrings scattered throughout the plot, while the undercurrents of romantic tension between Dakota and Cage will keep romance fans feeling the heat. As a mystery buff whose favorite sub-genre is the police procedural, I particularly enjoyed following Atkins and his partner as they work to stop a serial killer. Deadly Secret is highly recommended.
