In Death in the Fields by Eric M. Bischoff, Rich Willis is grappling with depression and lingering guilt over the death of his close friend Jeannie. After leaving for college, Rich gradually drifted apart from Jeannie, which is his greatest regret. Rich is heading back to Black River, his birthplace, to settle his mother's estate and uncover what happened to Jeannie. Twenty years ago, Jeannie was attacked and buried in a potato field. The killer was never identified, and Rich is determined to find the person responsible. Throughout his investigation, Rich discovers that he never truly knew Jeannie’s family. The family he learns about now includes a father who struggled with alcoholism, and there was a history of drug use. Rich soon finds himself in the sights of the killer and must race against time to unravel the mystery and bring the killer to justice.
The storyline of Death in the Fields by Eric M. Bischoff was intricate and thrilling. The writing style was captivating and kept me engaged from start to finish. The plot was fast-moving and filled with surprising twists and turns. I was constantly kept guessing and found myself on the edge of my seat, nervously biting my nails. The portrayal of the community and its surroundings was vivid and easy to imagine. I had no trouble accompanying Rich on his quest for the truth. I could sense the tension from the secrets just waiting to be revealed. The characters were well-developed and believable. The book contained all the elements of a fantastic thriller and was exceptionally well-written. The conclusion was a significant shock that caught me off guard. The cliffhanger has left me so intrigued that I eagerly await the next installment in the series.
