Death in the Long Shadows by Francis M. Flavin is about Paul Thayer, a middle-aged American hunter who goes to Namibia’s Caprivi Strip for a dangerous safari. Still grieving his wife, he hopes the hunt will give him something to focus on and a sense of purpose. At camp, Paul encounters Johan, a skilled hunter who takes rules and preparation seriously, along with trackers and rangers who know the terrain perfectly. Tension spikes when some clients act irresponsibly, especially after a killing that violates fair chase. Preparing to confront the Cape Buffalo, famous for their deadly charges, Paul can feel his fear growing. When the buffalo surround him, Paul can’t ignore the threat—he has to deal with the wildlife and confront his own fears. Will Paul make it through the hunt and find clarity in the wild?
In Death in the Long Shadows, Francis M. Flavin blends adventure with deep reflection, putting the reader right in the middle of an African safari. The narrative flows naturally from thrilling hunting scenes to Paul’s personal reflections on fear, grief, and duty. The African landscape is vivid, from the floodplains to camp routines and wildlife dangers. The author makes it clear that ethical hunting matters, revealing how some hunters honor the land while others ignore the rules. Paul gradually learns, with his fear easing into careful attention and a genuine respect for his surroundings. The story also explores conservation, local culture, and the uneasy balance between tourists and residents. If you like adventures that mix action with moral questions and realistic details, this book is worth reading.
