We all have a song inside our head that plays at a special beat, one that is unique to us. Many of us hear pleasant, happy songs with a steady, regular beat. But Delilah hears a song that’s overly loud, raucous, with an annoyingly irregular beat. No one can hear Delilah’s song, just as no one can hear anyone else’s song. But this song affects the way we go about our day, the way we live our life. Delilah is driven to move fast, just like her music. She can’t sleep as the music invades her head all day and all night. This makes her cranky and angry and sometimes her actions are unpredictable and misunderstood. Delilah has ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyper-Activity Disorder. She really wants you to understand her, to appreciate how she moves to a completely different music than either you or me. She wants you to accept her for who she is.

Chantilly Smith’s picture book story, Delilah’s Song, is an intuitive and sweet story that will teach young readers about acceptance, understanding, and compassion. We’re all different and we need to embrace our unique differences. The author wrote the story in a simple language to help young readers follow along. It’s written in lyrical rhyming verse, with spectacular illustrations that are bright, bold, and colorful. Even the font of the text frequently changes to emphasize many of Delilah’s points. The plot follows Delilah as she describes the music in her head, how it’s different from everyone else’s music, and how she wants others to welcome her as a friend even when they don’t understand what she does or why she does it. Using the power of music and the songs within us, this author cleverly presents Delilah’s condition in a universal language that everyone understands. This is a beautiful story, full of love and attention to detail and, of course, attention to the music that drives us all.
