Demon's Deal: The Demon's Daughter Series by L. G. Smith is a short story set in Ethiopia. It follows a young woman, Bilillee, who never gives up on trying to have a more meaningful and happier life. This wonderfully portrays her determined character in times of adversity. Bilillee is about to become a mother. Having her first child in a stressful environment, with an abusive husband who puts pressure on her to give birth to a son, is no easy feat. Despite the hardship, Bilillee's first child is born safely, but only after making a demonic deal with a tall, dark stranger. Will that deal save her as well, or is she destined for a loveless, hard life in a brutal world without her children?

Setting up the story with ease and empathy, L. G. Smith encourages us to sympathize with the strong female characters who find their inner strength and identity while surrounded by hate and abuse. There is a fine line between love and hate, which is strongly portrayed with different characters who each play a significant role in moving the story forward. Smith creates an atmosphere full of emotional turmoil but with bits and pieces of love and care shining through. This short piece will intrigue every reader while, at the same time, it portrays traumatic life moments. It allows us to see the unseen and to get excited about the female-led story that can both empower and send chills down one’s spine. It is exciting and full of relatable emotions, which I loved.
