Angelina Avery’s Devil In Exile is a science fiction story with a unique spin. Instead of being set in space, the story opens with a crew on a submarine. Captain Ada is trying to complete a research project to discover why the ocean is forming multiple deep trenches. A storm hits, she loses a crew member, and the remaining three people take the submarine underwater. Suddenly, something rams the submarine, throwing the crew inside. Along with crewmate Thomasina, Ada is standing on the submarine when another ship approaches. Chassaks, creatures armed with poisonous quills, attack. Ada falls into the ocean after being struck. Unknown to everyone, another cloaked boat has been watching the ordeal. Kyllell rescues Ada and leaves the scene. Kyllell, a horned alien, is determined to win over Ada and make her his bonded mate for life.
Angelina Avery did not skimp on the details of this story. I can picture every character's features of their physical and mental capacity without hesitation. The engaging dialogue between Kyllell and Ada is realistic, and the arguments on both sides are rational. I would be really distrusting of Kyllell like Ada is, especially waking up to a giant alien preventing me from moving. The thought of sex with an alien is completely terrifying. The action is nonstop in the book, and it vividly describes every moment without slowing down the pace. There are several events and a cliffhanger ending that make this a great first book in a series. Readers who enjoy science-fiction books with some romance and realistic action will like Devil In Exile.
