Dino Wars by Brent Reilly is a brilliant blend of thriller and epic fantasy, a story that creates a powerful conflict between humans and intelligent raptors who have evolved through the harshest conditions. They are tall and many times heavier than humans and there are millions of them entering the Americas. A young man, wanting to avenge his parents and protect those he loves, mounts the fiercest offensive against the raptors. But there is a traitor in his camp and it may be too late before he discovers who it is.
The story starts with a preface that dates back to 60,000 years B.C. What struck me as I opened this book was how the author brings two time periods together — the distant past and the present. The novel contains very interesting archaeological assumptions, and the author makes it real, creating characters with emotions that readers can relate to. The protagonist is a young man who is forced to mature by circumstances and one who has a hunger for revenge in his heart, having lost his parents to the creatures he is out to destroy.
The merging of archaeology with historical and cultural elements makes this novel a compelling one. Brent Reilly writes with great clarity of phrase and there are seeming neologisms — or perhaps new words to learn — that enrich the prose and create a unique culture for the book’s setting. Dino Wars features skillful writing laden with interesting and plot-driven dialogues, compelling characters, and a phenomenal conflict; it’s a great work of entertainment.
