I wouldn’t have considered cows an endangered species, but, surprisingly, in some parts of the world, their way of existence is threatened. In the Netherlands, for example, the cows are wading through seawater in the morning when the sea level rises and feeding on seaweed instead of land weeds. Perhaps the most surprising, though it shouldn’t be after what’s happened globally in the past year, is that humans are also considered endangered and one day we might have to live underground just to survive. Frightening thoughts, but as climate change and negligent care of our planet intensifies, “It’s sad to say, the beauty of the land, ocean, sky, and animals may not be there anymore anyway.”

Ronnie Swire Siegel’s picture book, Displaced, is a powerful testament to our times and the fearful prognosis of the future. The author only chose 14 animals (including humans) to make the point that the very survival on this planet is at risk. Each animal is introduced with a description and a beautiful photograph of its natural habitat, then the author summarizes with a similar quote each time, like the quote used above, “it’s sad to say, [insert natural habitat of that animal] might not be there anymore anyway. This repetitive line really drives home the point about climate change and how it’s affecting every living creature on this planet – including humans. The end of the book includes questions and further information for educators to use in teaching this material. Beautifully presented with care and thoughtful insight into the science behind the issue of climate change.
