Author Biography

Shedding the confines of an evangelical church and the dingy corridors of downtown Denver, Len Amato set off on a twenty year journey through the islands of the Eastern Caribbean and South America. Along the way, he rediscovered himself through his passion for the sea. Logging over seven thousand dives and countless miles under sail; Len's quest for adventure has taken him from the depths of the Andros Island Blue Holes to the summit of the swanky charter yacht industry. After being featured along with his boat "Opus" in Jacquelyn Mitchard's best selling novel - Still Summer - Len embarked on yet another journey - writing his first novel - while living with his wife Donna amidst the trees and tranquility of the Finger Lakes.

Diver Down by Len Amato is a fast-paced and sometimes funny novel about a marine investigator named Nick Gabrielo and his female partner, Antonise ("Nise"). Set predominantly in the Virgin Islands, Nick is asked to investigate a diving accident in which a man was injured and his wife killed. The dive boat owner, Sparky, is a seedy character who threatens to undermine Nick's ability to control the investigation which begins to bring in one set of questionable characters after another. A Rastafarian man is solicited as an accomplice investigator, as is a woman named Chi Chi, a character who enters the novel when Nick chooses to rent a car in Miami. It just so happens that the additional investigators seem to know exactly what to do in order to bring about enlightenment to the case.

As Nick and Nise delve in the investigation, barely skirting the law, and, oftentimes, breaking it themselves, they are joined by the Virgin Island Police Chief who is known as Fire. The police chief is ready to wheel and deal in order to bring about an end to the investigation and to cut his own losses.

Language is strong in places and the themes of sex, violence and drugs may be a bit much for some mystery readers. However, the author does give a good portrayal of a segment of the Virgin Islands and Miami population, and he does develop the story well. The author obviously knows the territory in the world of diving, and, as a result, his story is credible and generally enjoyable.
