What happens when the story you’re reading starts falling apart—literally? Don’t Shake This Book by Rob Clare is a clever picture book that turns storytelling upside down when someone starts shaking it. The story begins with Arthur, a typical boy who’s excited about being in a new children’s book. But then the ground shakes, Arthur tumbles around, and all of a sudden, the words and pictures fall off the pages! He and his friend Dylan are trapped inside an empty book and must try to put everything back together again, all with a bit of unexpected help (wink-wink). They must travel through mysterious doors, dark hallways, and even endure a monster chase that leads them to a clever twist that blurs the line between reader and story. Full of suspense and imagination, this book is a guaranteed page-turner for young readers.

Don’t Shake This Book is a clever, fast-paced adventure that will pull kids in right away. Rob Clare turns a simple idea into something enjoyable and creative. It’s almost like a story mixed with a game. I really like how the characters speak directly to readers when they ask for help, much like TV characters talking directly to the audience. As an educator, I love how it playfully introduces kids to the parts of a book (like the words and pictures) and even how books are made (like writing the plot). I think it will get readers or listeners thinking about how books work, and it may even spark some creative writing ideas or interesting classroom discussions. The illustrations add an extra element of fun. They’re bright and expressive, making the story come alive. So, next time you get a new book, you'd better think twice about shaking it. You never know what might happen or who you might meet.
