Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is on a mission to find peace, tranquility, and equity in a world not quite ready to make a big change. He’s fought for equal rights in the United States, through peaceful demonstrations and well-thought-out speeches. Now, he feels the need to follow in another peacemaker’s footsteps, to follow the path Mahatma Gandhi trod on his own mission of peace to bring equity and justice to all people in India. In Cara Reese’s Dr. King Goes to India!, the journey begins and the sage words of Gandhi, “Where there is love there is life,” ring true in Dr. King’s quest for equal rights and freedom for all.

Cara Reese’s picture book, Dr. King Goes to India! A Cool Kids’ Guide, takes young readers on an interesting and educational journey to a distant country where human rights have fought the battle for peace and justice for many decades. The author begins with a summary of the year (1959), the people (Dr. King and his wife, Coretta), the country (India), and the equal rights brigade that was gaining momentum in the United States as well as other parts of the world. The language is simple so young readers can easily follow along. The illustrations are fascinating collages of images from India coupled with images of the people in the story, particularly the Kings. The author uses well-chosen quotes from Gandhi’s literature and places these quotes strategically within the text. Brilliantly presented, this book is an engaging as well as fabulous teaching tool.
