Dream On, We're Almost Home is a collection of art and writings produced by Pere Ibañez, a Spanish artist. Inspired by a line from “A Dream Within a Dream” by Edgar Allen Poe, it differs greatly from his earlier collections which were dark in both tone and topic. Instead, it’s a surreal presentation of the world of dreams and the subconscious, in part as a way of coping with periods of isolation and loneliness or with the loss of loved ones. The author’s father and two beloved pets had passed away and are memorialized in this collection. It was noted that the collection was produced at the artist’s studio in China during the pandemic. The album is divided into three chapters: Dawn, Dusk, and Twilight.
In Dream On, We're Almost Home, Pere Ibañez gives us a collection of photographic art and poetry that has both emotional and visual depth. Beginning with a line from one of Poe's best-known poems: “All that we see or seem/is but a dream within a dream,” the pages are filled with vibrant colors, rich textures, fantastical images, and poignant, thought-provoking text. What happens to our hopes, our heartbreak, our sadness, and our joy after this life, Ibañez asks, admitting that until now he hadn't thought much about it. My favorite poem is laid out visually as a spiral, evoking the cycle of life and death and the interconnectedness of those here now with those who have gone before. I utterly enjoyed this visually stunning album and was touched by the feelings it engendered.
