Eylene Miller wakes up on her eleventh birthday, never expecting the amazing adventure that is to come in Dreambreath by Kristyn Van Cleave. Not realizing that she had been living with an adopted mother for the past seven years, Eylene puts on her beautiful birthday dress and shoes, as well as a strange eye pendant, to go sit in her private place in the woods. Reading her favorite story of wizards and other magical beings, Eylene suddenly finds herself performing magic and wakes up in the palace of Alyxia with the headmaster of the school of magic.
Since Eylene is younger than the usual student, and her actual abilities need to remain secret, she is taught privately so that she can develop the talents she never knew she had. Eylene’s parents, the Dreambreaths, sent her away before she could be killed by Mortimeir, the evil conjurer who wants to rule over all the houses and classes of magic. When her dreams become infected with evil, and the presence of Mortimeir is detected at the school, everyone rallies around Eylene to protect her. Will that be enough or are there spies ready to Mortimeir’s bidding?
The characters of Dreambreath by Kristyn Van Cleave welcome you to an exciting new world of magic! There is plenty of intrigue because the past is coming back to shape the present as the only conjurer left has come of age. Good magic continually fights against bad as the evil forces try to defeat the last conjurer and her friends. The exciting plot and imaginative use of spells keep you turning the pages, anxious for more as the sides are drawn in the battle for Alyxia’s future. Great job. I really enjoyed the story. I can't wait to see what happens next!
