Dreamy First Love and Unforgettable First Loss: Little Heartfelt Poems by Charlie High is a book of poetry that reminds us all that, once upon a time, we were young. As I say this out loud, my husband is giving me the stink eye. Yes, yes...we're still young, all right? The compilation of 36 poems was actually written by the author when he was as youthful as the number on his driver's license, as we feel (at heart) today. Most are rhythmic and all are lyrical, such as the spirited and soulful poem Someone, an ode to a girl named Jane who I definitely should be friends with myself. Another is Manic, which aches as you read it, epitomizing the devastating heartbreak of youth, when the emotions are pure but the emotional maturity to handle them hasn't developed yet.
Dreamy First Love and Unforgettable First Loss is an honest and sincere collection that many will be able to connect with, whether it is as teenagers now, or basking in the glow of yesteryear. Poetry is highly personal and subjective, and Charlie High is upfront in his introduction that he's not expecting them to read like Shakespeare's sonnets. That said, considering the age in which they were written and the fact that the words - however simple - are still poignant today is remarkable. If there was such a thing as a Valentine's Day stocking stuffer, this little gem of a book would be it. I'd recommend High's poetry to all those who have experienced the first bloom of love, a feeling that's timeless.
