In 1749, fifteen-year-old Lillian ‘Lilly’ Robinson, the daughter of a plantation farmer, was beginning to learn about the harsh realities of her wealthy family’s privileged life at Ironwood Manor, Virginia. Her father was a ruthless slave owner, and her mother was an arrogant, obsessive classist. Curious about the lives of the slaves, Lilly sneaks into the untamed woodlands of her father’s vast acres. She ends up forming a bond with an Irish indentured servant, something forbidden at the manor. Soon, Lilly is cast out by her furious father. Living among the slaves, Lilly finds herself on a treacherous journey pursuing freedom, all the while experiencing and confronting the injustices of human bondage. Meanwhile, in 2018, after suffering betrayal and losing her job, Piper Cooper goes on a road trip in search of clarity and a new beginning. Her adventure leads her to the property of Lillian Robinson, where she is about to discover well-kept secrets about the woman and a dark time in American history. Running the storyline on a double timeline, Jordan weaves a plot anchored in a heart-warming yet poignant tale of resilience, betrayal, survival, forbidden love, tragedy, fate, adventure, drama, and more. The vivid depictions of the scenes uniquely captured the backdrop of pre-Civil War America. It felt like I was back in the mid-eighteenth century, experiencing the ugly and heart-wrenching reality of slavery. I could feel the palpable fear, tension, and sadness among them. It was terrifying imagining that they had to live through such harrowing conditions every day, and have no certainty about when they would be free of that life. I learned a lot about the culture and lifestyle of the era. The subtle tone of the storyline kept me guessing as to what was coming next. The purposeful, character-driven conversations gave insight into the cast’s conflicts. Lovers of historical novels will find Karla Jordan’s Echoes From Jericho Creek an enthralling read.
