Running the storyline on a double timeline, Jordan weaves a plot anchored in a heart-warming yet poignant tale of resilience, betrayal, survival, forbidden love, tragedy, fate, adventure, drama, and more. The vivid depictions of the scenes uniquely captured the backdrop of pre-Civil War America. It felt like I was back in the mid-eighteenth century, experiencing the ugly and heart-wrenching reality of slavery. I could feel the palpable fear, tension, and sadness among them. It was terrifying imagining that they had to live through such harrowing conditions every day, and have no certainty about when they would be free of that life. I learned a lot about the culture and lifestyle of the era. The subtle tone of the storyline kept me guessing as to what was coming next. The purposeful, character-driven conversations gave insight into the cast’s conflicts. Lovers of historical novels will find Karla Jordan’s Echoes From Jericho Creek an enthralling read.
