Recognizing and celebrating diversity has nothing to do with compromising your own beliefs. So, with her mother’s permission, little Effie invites all her friends to come and celebrate Friendsgiving. They will have all types of food based on different cultures: latkes, pot stickers, mashed potatoes, and the like. Of course, everyone is to share their cultural background, including what major holiday they celebrate. In Effie’s Friendsgiving, Jennifer Morhaime shares the importance of accepting diversity and celebrating together. This book is a cultural cornucopia. One of the games they play is Dreidel, which is a Jewish tradition. They all enjoyed playing in the snow. Learning about the different cultures did not negate their own. Teach your children to respect others and their beliefs. Teach them to welcome others. Teach them that love covers many differences.
In Effie’s Friendsgiving, Jennifer Morhaime teaches about many different cultures. You and your child will have fun reading about the Lunar New Year or playing with a dreidel and discussing what cultural backgrounds these represent. Your children will hear terms like Menorah, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Ramadan. Other cultures celebrate Lunar New Year or Diwali. Learn about these and others in this book, then spend time teaching your children how to research more information on the internet. Celebrating together is a great way to build unity and understanding. Let’s teach our children to major in our similarities, respect our differences, and accept all with open arms. Notice the kids did not major in their differences, but in their friendship. Hameoart does a great job bringing all the characters to life.
