Immerse yourself in a captivating adventure with Ann Hoang's Ella and Jake in the City of Sad. Featuring illustrations by Charity Russell, the book follows two young siblings, Ella and Jake, on a day when their mom leaves them with their Uncle Theo. Uncle Theo has errands to run in the nearby City of Sad, and he takes Ella and Jake with him to the city. The two kids come across Harold, a clown who is unhappy after the local balloon factory shut down and he lost his magical hat that he used to make people laugh. Harold takes Ella and Jake on a tour around the city, and they adopt a pet mouse while Ella gifts Harold with a different magical hat. Slowly, they work toward turning the town into the City of Smiles.

Ella and Jake in the City of Sad by Ann Hoang is a wholesome children’s book that follows the adventure of two siblings. The story begins when Jake is upset because he desperately wants his stuffed pillow, Kitty. Their Uncle Theo arrives just in time and informs them that duty calls in a nearby city suffering from despondency. They drive to the Crestfallen Café, where Uncle Theo introduces them to his melancholic friend, Harold, who studied at the Clown Academy. Harold agrees to keep the children company while Uncle Theo runs some errands. They visit the town center, Mournful Millie’s Millinery Market, Dr Dismal’s Dispensary, and finally, Humdrum Haven. Will Ella and Jake discover how to cheer Harold up and save the city from despair?

Ann Hoang offers young readers an imaginative and hopeful story written with as much color as its contents. When the children purchase a new hat for Harold so that he can make balloons again, this simple and thoughtful gesture has a massive impact on the city. The narrative highlights that ordinary acts can often produce the most profound changes. It only takes something small to transform even the most barren place into something beautiful. This is also illustrated when Harold allows the children to take home a pet mouse, which brings Jake immense joy. If you’re looking for a story about compassion and magic, Ella and Jake in the City of Sad is an enchanting tale that packs a powerful message and will be enjoyed by all age groups.
