Elva of the Seas by Jordan Elizabeth is a short novella to delight the hearts of lovers of fantasy and fairy tales. Princess Elva is sent away on a holiday from the kingdom where her younger sister has just become queen. It feels more like exile, but it’s the beginning of an adventure where she is taken captive by pirates and brought to a faraway island. The pirates are on a quest, and her part is to talk them past the sea serpents that guard the place. What will they find there? Does Elva have the skills and magic to see them through the dangers awaiting them? And does she have a future with the handsome sea captain?

Elva of the Seas is Book Three in the Serpent Riders series, and a marvelous stand-alone story as well. Jordan Elizabeth tells a compelling tale, which also has a lot of emotional resonance; a princess facing exile, leaving behind the known and familiar, a daughter and sister trying to understand why things went so wrong, and a chance to find happiness in a new world. The action is fast-paced and sure, told in vivid language. The steampunk world forms a coherent and complex setting. Elva’s emotional journey is no less compelling, as she struggles to find herself and use her innate powers to help. Elva and her sea captain are very likable characters, and I can’t help wishing we could read more about their further adventures. Perhaps a fourth, and longer, sequel?
