In Embattled Brother by Lindy Bell, Lucas Matthews returns to Abernathy to assume the role of fire chief. Milton Carr was confident he would be awarded the position and made it known to Lucas that he was unhappy with the current situation. Lucas struggled to comprehend how Carr had managed to climb the ranks in the service despite his overt defiance toward a superior officer. The fire department responded to a series of suspicious fires, making it evident that an arsonist was active in Abernathy. Upon reaching the sixth fire, they discovered a gas can along with a note addressed to Lucas. It became apparent that someone intended to drive Lucas out of Abernathy, and Carr was the only one who seemed to have a personal issue with him. Carr also spread lies about Lucas, and as the leader, Lucas believed the firefighters had the right to know the truth. Lucas felt compelled to share a deeply personal story that he thought he had left behind.
The storyline in Embattled Brother by Lindy Bell was complex and captivating. The story was packed with action that never let up. From the beginning to the end, I was completely engrossed. With all the unexpected developments, I could never anticipate what would come next. The tension kept me glued to the page, flipping through them as fast as I could. I could not put the book down, as I feared missing something crucial. The characters were well developed and relatable. Lucas was my favorite character; he was a fantastic leader who genuinely cared for his team. I certainly disliked Carr, but his presence was crucial for the plot's intrigue. The writing was superb, maintaining my focus throughout. The conclusion was utterly shocking and entirely unforeseen.
