Emergence of Me: Discovering My Identity and the Courage Within by Denise C. Herndon Harvey takes us on a journey of self-discovery. This is the story of a confused and bewildered little girl wanting to know God, to really know Him, but failing to find her answers about who she really is and what to do with her life. Right throughout, Denise encounters challenges of doing and thinking as she believed God would want her to do, but stumbling as the desire to be a “people pleaser” triumphs time and again. As an adult, she married a military man and became a military spouse, but the demands of doing everything right, to be seen as a structured and perfect family, eventually took their toll. She became sick and learned to accept herself for who she was, finally realizing that our beginnings do not determine our end. She learned how to keep her dreams alive!
Whether Christian or non-believer, this book inspires true seekers who do not summarily dismiss what they have always considered a myth, a fairy tale. If you truly are a pursuer who tasked yourself to discover your purpose, then this is a must-read, along with all the other religions you are exploring. Written with sensitivity, raw honesty, and candor, Emergence of Me has the element which led me to explore my own self, identifying with Denise C. Herndon Harvey’s fears, anxieties, and challenges. I found myself feeling uncomfortable while reading, fidgeting on my chair because it was so close to home. This book is honest and courageous, an easy read written by the soul for the soul.
