Eternal by J.P. Ramzy follows Tara in the aftermath of a global event that removes him and many others from daily life. As systems fail and support networks collapse, Tara faces a late-term pregnancy while facing eviction, resource and aid scarcity, and shifting public order. Her search for shelter leads to Devyn and Isaac, travelers responding to the worldwide incident known by some as the Rapture, and by others as the Blackout. Their attempt to assist Tara brings together reports of a meteor strike, rumors of otherworldly involvement, and claims of spiritual meaning circulating through a disrupted society. As her condition worsens during birth, Tara revisits her past, including family history and earlier choices, while confronting the possibility that her unborn child has significance tied to events unfolding across the world.
“For he is the last unborn, untainted soul on earth.” Eternal by J.P. Ramzy is a unique twist to the usual dystopian novel, and the shifts between Tara's look at who she was and where she is now are an affecting mix of human crisis and forced courage in a collapsing world. Ramzy does a fantastic job of giving the setting massive texture and realism in the search for food, shelter, and a place for Tara to give birth that is eerily consistent with what someone homeless in the actual, real world might experience. It is also reminiscent of, and a metaphor for, a famed story, which is a testament to Ramzy's skill as a writer. Physical hardship and spiritual uncertainty are the guy ropes that hold the tent down, and the novel shines most in its unwavering attention to Tara’s determination to protect her unborn son and her refusal to surrender to despair. Very highly recommended.
