Ether Realms: Saving Korvath by Latrell Veal is a thrilling fantasy adventure that immerses readers in a world where magic, technology, and destiny intersect. The story takes place in Korvath, in the vibrant world of Orionis, where 14-year-old Kofi and his friends Tola, Kaya, and Chima are on a mission to bring back what is valuable to their people and home. Everything is peaceful until the cybernetic Metrolians invade their jungle village. Drawn into a world of advanced technology, ancient magic, and hidden truths, the kids must explore new places, make alliances, and figure out who they can truly trust. Meanwhile, Kofi's older brother, Kenji, refuses to abandon hope, scouring the jungle for clues. Back in Metrolia, scientist Avalon Nguyen uncovers dark secrets about Dr. Shobli and the Metrolians. Finally, the group takes a risk to get back their people and home, even if they're not quite sure how. Packed with magical visions, this adventure explores loyalty, identity, and the courage to stand together against impossible odds.
Latrell Veal excels in crafting the world and its language. Vivid descriptions bring Orionis to life as a vibrant place. The conversations feel genuine, and so do the exchanges between Kofi's group and the rogue Aurelian thieves. Kofi's journey from doubt to determination forms the emotional core, while Kenji's fiery strength is softened by quiet moments of brotherly love. Kaya, the blue-haired outcast, has a tragic past and an unspoken bond with Chima, whose squeaks and hugs somehow say everything. Tola grounds the group with logic and sarcasm, and the Aurelian thieves (Zoto, Medius, and Mya) steal scenes with chaotic brilliance. Kofi's love for his homeland is evident in his internal conflict, where finding beauty in a peaceful foreign place while his own home is falling apart captures the bittersweet ache of displacement and loyalty. Kaya's revelation that he genuinely belongs is one of the most satisfying emotional payoffs. His realization that "It wasn't just any place… it was home" hits with quiet power. Overall, Ether Realms: Saving Korvath is a dazzling story that delivers what it promises.
