An original and excellent small-town mystery novel, Eulogy in Black and White by Caleb Pirtle III follows a baffling chain of murders in a little town in Texas. As an Afghan War veteran, Graham Huston battles with trauma and the untimely death of his best friend during their military service. He drifts from town to town until he arrives at Magnolia Bluff where he works at the local newspaper office. Huston soon finds out that the town is plagued by a horrifying mystery. On a specific date, someone is murdered. This year’s May 23 is fast approaching and someone will not survive. The day arrives and the serial killer strikes again. Determined to find out who is behind the town’s killings, Huston digs into Magnolia Bluff’s history.

Equally intriguing and humorous, Caleb Pirtle has delivered a deftly-written story that fans of murder mysteries will thoroughly enjoy. His writing is direct and precise, without too much detail that could bog down the plot. The feeling of dread that hangs over Magnolia Bluff creates exciting, suspenseful twists that drive the story forward. The work is imaginative with compelling and memorable main characters and equally interesting secondary characters. I liked how the story kept me guessing and enjoyed its powerful, rewarding ending. The second book in The Magnolia Bluff Crime Chronicles, Eulogy in Black and White by Caleb Pirtle III offers a fascinating and immersive mystery full of tension told through an engaging main character. Readers will love Huston’s humor and straightforward and incisive journalistic style. Highly recommended.
