Eva the Diva by Adam T. Newman starts us off with Eva, a glamorous little girl full of charm and possibly a tiny bit too much confidence. She loves Paris and stars, has a lovely room with a chandelier and shelves full of trophies, and is certain she’ll be the star of the school play as she always has been. Pretty much everything has been perfect for her. She’s popular in school, never sick, and has a beautiful singing voice. As she dreams of performing in Times Square and being followed by paparazzi, she marches confidently toward the cast sheet on the wall. Shockingly, she discovers that her part isn’t what she was expecting. For the first time, the lead role belongs to someone else. What will she do now when, so clearly, the part should have been hers?

Adam T. Newman’s book Eva the Diva, skillfully illustrated by Susan G. Young, is a story about accepting the unexpected, embracing change, and finding the positive aspects. It was truly inspiring to see a character arc in a fairly short children’s book, particularly one that was so believable. Young’s brightly colored illustrations add another level of interest to the book, with hidden stars and excellent detail that bring the characters to life. This is a lovely book, written in rhyme, with a great story, relatable characters, and an excellent lesson. The illustrations complement the book perfectly and will keep both children and adults finding new, entertaining elements each time they read it.
