Even Though... I Love You! by Rita Mendoza and Hector Luciano attains perfection in countless ways. The cartoon-style illustrations are incredibly well-drawn and colorful. Each is accompanied by a short, simple sentence that sums up what the reader, or the child listening, can see. The story scales the heights like an Everest mountaineer, adding step by step to the difficulties and problems Creed, the dog, piles on his family. There are a vast number of “even though” situations, placing an almost intolerable strain on “I love you”. The descent, such as when an ice axe fails to grip, or a rope breaks, is fast. From “Even though you nibble my ears” to “I love when you make me smile” at the turn of a page.
The appeal of Even Though... I Love You! is universal and ageless in more ways than one – dogs have been “man’s best friend” since the beginning of time. This picture book shows Creed as a mischievous puppy, mostly annoying the adults of the family, from chewing a yoga mat to interrupting a Zoom session. Scenes are guaranteed to amuse young readers or hold the attention of those having the story read to them. The appeal to adults is the reminder of unconditional love. I lost my “best friend” recently. The power of Even Though... I Love You! brought comfort and the courage to go get another. Rita Mendoza and Hector Luciano have given the world a ten-star book. Buy one for yourself, use copies as gifts, but don’t miss it.
